A British dad has tragically died after collapsing at the summit of a mountain while on a hike for his daughter’s birthday. The man, 63, had spent the day hiking on Ella Rock in the south of Sri Lanka when he suddenly fell ill and suffered a heart attack upon reaching the summit.

The father and daughter arrived in Sri Lanka on October 16 to celebrate the young woman’s 34th birthday. Just over a week later, on October 24, they decided to hike up Ella Rock, which can take up to four hours to complete. But according to local police, once they reached the top of the mountain, the dad is believed to have collapsed.

He was rushed to the nearby Bandarawela Hospital but tragically died. An autopsy revealed the 63-year-old suffered a heart attack.

After arriving in the country on October 16, the father and daughter spent her birthday trip exploring the coastal town of Weligama, before making the trip to Ella Rock.

Ella Rock, which is believed to be over 3,700ft tall and has an elevation gain of around 1,550ft, features a mix of steep slopes, rocky terrain, and rice fields.

The Daily Express has contacted the Foreign Office for comment. 

It comes as a daredevil extreme sport speed flyer crashed to his death while on holiday in Turkey.

Vyacheslav Gribanov, 37, launched from 5,580ft on Babadağ mountain, near Fethiye, but lost control and smashed into rocks, according to reports.
